Taku Kōrero, Taku Mahi:

Ko Kathleen Maki tōku ingoa. Ko Aitutaki ratou ko Manahiki ko Bora Bora oku iwi.

As a daughter of Tāngata o Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa I appreciate the rich historical ties and whakapapa that connect Tangata whenua o Aotearoa and our people of the Pacific. It’s this whanaungatanga that calls me to support the next generation of Māori and Pacific midwives and our whānau in the community.

The preservation and discovery of Pacific knowledge and honouring matauranga Māori throughout a whānau’s haputanga journey, within the tapu space of birth and once their pēpe arrives is enriching.

My husband and I have four tamaraki, and a beautiful extended whānau. I still practice as a midwife/kaiwhakawhānau/tapuhi, however my current roles as a midwifery kaiako/lecturer and Pacific Liaison for Tapu Ora keep me busy. Over the years I have facilitated antenatal classes and lectured into the New Zealand Diploma in Pregnancy, Childbirth and Early Parenting Education. My current research and interests include Pacific Health and Leadership.
