Tēnā koutou katoa, this oriori embraces the kinship and narratives of rich Kāi Tahu tīpuna. Since my return to Te Waipounamu, the matemateāone of land and whakapapa has afforded me opportunities to compose waiata such as the oriori 'Hinerukutai'. This oriori carries ontological messages of rights qualities and hope for our dear tamariki, testifying to the richness of their heritage.

He kura āku, ki tō mātāwai
mai i tawhiti
puta atu ai a Rakitata, a Rakaia a Waitaki
he wai pito tāwekoweko kua rakitamirohia
i ahu mai i te wai kou o Rēhua
Ko koe rā te inati a Tahu
He uri nā koe i te kāhui kura a Takaroa
Te kopa iti a Raureka,
Te ariki tapairu Te Aotaumarewa,
ko te pounamu a Moroiti ko kaikanohi e
ko te tioriori ko Papakura tērā
ko te pāharakeke o Hinekakai
ko ēnei wahine nui puku
ko ō rātau purapura o ukiuki mau tonu e
Tāhuri mai rā ō tarika kia areare ai
Kia roko atu ki kā ohiti a kā māreikura
Koi kiīa he tamati wāwahi tahā
kai taku ropa
Arotahitia ki ruka rā
kia kai tō mata i te ika o te raki
ki kā wai o Hiwaiteraki
i ēnei rā hurihuri,
he mahi kai hōaka he mahi kai takata,
koi watua o kaihīnaki ki te ware
Mau tonu ki te puna o Tū o Moko
Hai hoa haere mōhou
ka ohu ka ora e pokohiwitahi ai te haere
kai taku kura e
Translation:
He kura āku, ki tō mātāwai mai i tawhiti
My precious plume, formed from the upper reaches far away
i rapua nā koe i te kore te whiwhia, te kore te rawea
You, searched for in the shapless void searched in the intangible void
ki te whare waihakahaka
To the house of form
ki te kanoi o te uha rā
held fast and suspended on the female strand
Sanctified with the crimson earth, earth sanctified, heaven sanctified
ki te kura o te tapu
With the gift of sacred divinity
ki kā kura Hawaikī rā anō e
With gifts from the ancient homeland
Komo mai rā e te tau ki te whaiao
Enter sweetheart into the world of light
Ki te ura o te ata,
To the crimson dawn
te hirika atua te hirika o Hineātauira
the vitality of the gods, it is Hineātauira
To be nourished with the cockel juice, and fruits of your lands
kā tini hua, ‘ te iwa o Matariki ‘
‘Copious Matariki ‘
kauria ka wai o Matatū e kō
Cleanse in the summit high water, oh girl
kā tāraitaka o Tuterakiwhanoa
In the sculpted depictions of Tuterakiwhanoa
kā waiparahoaka e hora nei
Behold, ‘the expansive Southern Alp glaciers’
puta ai a Rakitata, a Rakaia a Waitaki
Giving way to the glacial rivers Rakitata, Rakaia and Waitaki
he wai pito kua rakitamirohia
The braided umbilical waters
i ahu mai i te wai kou o Rēhua
Originating from Rehua’s cerebreal crown
Auē, te inati a Tahu, ko koe rā
To hold, descandant of Tahu, an heiress to the people
He uri nā koe i te kāhui kura a Takaroa
Descended from a bevy of chieftain daughters
Te kopa iti a Raureka,
the eminent satchel of Raureka
Te ariki tapairu Te Aotaumarewa,
the monarch, Te Aotaumarewa
ko te pounamu a Moroiti ko Kaikanohi e
the priestess Moroiti, and her mere pounamu Kaikanohi
ko te tioriori ko Papakura tērā
The warrioress, that is Papakura
ko te pāharakeke o Hinekakai
the inherited fibre twitch gene pools
te kāhui wahine nui puku, nāhau rā
Ilk of esteemed woman, your predecessors
Kia roko atu ki kā ohiti māreikura
Hear their accounts
Ā rātau purapura,tiria
Their testimonies, to be shared
Tāhuri mai ō tarika kia areare ai
Lean your ear, free it from obstruction
Koi kiīa ‘he tamati wāwahi tahā’
Lest it be said, a victim of Arrogance
Sheild yourself with the courage of Hākitekura
hai kahukura mōhou
as an adornment for your body
Kia whakakukua koe ki te taraokaoka
May you be tested by the taraokaoka
Ki te tātaraheka ki te tūmatakuru
by the tātaraheka and the tūmatakuru
kā taero rā nāhau nā Tūtekoropaka
The very obstacles confronted by Tutekoropaka
Fasten your top knot with the huia feather
tō tarika ki te kōkōtakiwai
Ornament your ear with the kōkōtakiwai
tō tinana ki te kāhu pōhoi toroa
And adorn your body with the garment of pōhoi toroa
kai taku ropa
You, oh sweetheart
Arotahitia ki ruka rā
Focus to the heavens
E kai ō mata i te Ika o te Raki
Feast upon the vista, the Milkyway
ki te pīrakorako o Hiwaiteraki
To the gleam of Hiwaiteraki
i ēnei rā hurihuri,
In these uncertain times
he mahi kai hōaka he mahi kai takata,
As the sandstone takes, the people are taken
koi watua o kaihīnaki ki te ware
Lest you gift your treasures to the ignorant
Mau tonu ki te puna o Tū o Moko
Hold fast to the spring of Tū of Moko
Hai hoa haere mōhou
As a travelling companion for you
ka ohu ka ora e pokohiwitahi ai te haere
There is much wellbeing in assisting `one another
kai taku kura e
My precious plume
