  • Ko te ara, ka puta mai

From pregnancy, birth to tamariki all comes with individuality. Embracing the uniqueness in ‘Ko te ara, ka puta mai’ the technique known as fauvism was most appropriate for its lively perception for the viewer. The colours are expressive of every differing experience.

The bold strong white koru kowhaiwhai panel is to unite both the journey and its singularity while simultaneously representing the close similarity of birth and life itself. Like the void of te Ao the black koru in the foreground is representative to the blank characteristics of an unknown life and future yet to come into fruition.

    Hāputanga Awhi

In honour of the dedication and contribution to the resurgence of our traditional birthing practices this piece ‘Hāputanga awhi’ is in homage to the Māori midwives and the dedication they bring to their mahi and clients. Since the launch of Hākui we have had the pleasure of being able to share just how hard our Māori midwives work with our whānau and how they tautoko our whānau. This piece encaptulates the kaupapa of Hākui and the Māori midwives who have been working alongside us to revive our traditional practises and awhi whānau who are wanting to apply these practises during hāputanga. • Te Hā Ora

Te Hā ora is inspired from the traditional birthing practises of Ngāi Tahu.

Using vibrant colours of spring encapsulates the essence of birth and new life. Incorporating tāniko into this work symbolises mount Aoraki and the southern Alps of Te Waipounamu.

The placement and natural environment embodies the purity of a maternal connection between mother and child and spiritual connection with Papatūānuku
